MAIN has recently submitted a collective response to the call for evidence informing the development of the mental health strategy for England, drawing on insights gathered through a consultation survey and meeting.
Our response highlights the often-overlooked mental health and wellbeing needs of people living with advanced progressive illness and those who care for them. Drawing on research evidence and examples of good practice, we make recommendations across several areas, including better integration of mental health and palliative care, stepped models of psychological support, action to reduce inequalities, support for carers, workforce training, and the thoughtful use of digital technologies. We call for the new strategy to explicitly recognise people affected by advanced illness and ensure they can access timely, appropriate and person-centred psychological support.
