The refresh of the James Lind Alliance (JLA) research priorities for palliative and end of life care, guided by those with lived and professional experience, identified two priorities focussing on end of life hospital care.
* How can the quality of palliative and end of life care in hospital be improved? What helps or hinders improvement?
* How can discharge from hospital be improved for people with any serious life-limiting illness?
In addition, end of life care was identified as the fifth priority in the 2022 refresh of the JLA emergency medicine priority setting partnership, led by RCEM.
* How can excellence be achieved in delivering end of life care in the Emergency Department?
* How can patients, families and staff be best supported with handling bereavement issues?
As a result, Marie Curie and RCEM have come together with the aim of fostering innovative research that brings meaningful improvements to the care of patients at the end of life presenting to Emergency Departments.
