Throughout September, for World Alzheimer's Month, Dementia Research UK is running a campaign on the importance of 'supporting research for every step'.
Dementia research attention and funding often cluster around prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The stages that follow – supporting people living with a diagnosis, the sustained work of unpaid carers, and the period at the end of life and bereavement - receive less. This is highly problematic, as people affected by dementia experience all of this journey, not a selected part.
The campaign is structured around three broad themes: (1) Prevention and diagnosis, (2) Support for people living with dementia and unpaid carers, and (3) End of life and bereavement.
The campaign features a short film with Professor Nick Fox of UCL Queen Square, setting out why research matters across each step of this journey. The campaign also draws on work with organisations including Dementia Carers Count and Trent Dementia, whose focus on unpaid carers overlaps with MAIN's interest in the wellbeing of those around the person who is ill.
How to get involved: Dementia Research UK welcomes contact from researchers and practitioners working in this area. There is also a campaign sign up for updates and future projects funded by Dementia Research UK.
